Joni Potekhen’s journey as an artist began shortly after she graduated as a dental hygienist from the University of Vermont in 1970. She then went on to her second major at UVM and earned “Fine Metals” degree making gold and silver jewelry. Her interest in photography came in 1993 when her then 13-year-old son wanted to go to a 3-day photography class at Colorado Mountain College. Well known wildlife photographer Perry Conway was teaching the class and explained that he had never had a student this young, but he would make it okay for him if she also joined the class. Her son fell in love with photography and down the road ending up with a scholarship at the Denver Art Institute College and mother and son have done about 50 Summit County weddings together. Joni joined the gallery when it was located at Keystone Lake and has been in both locations in the Silverthorne Outlets. Her work has evolved using various mediums and has become well known for her arresting I-phonography photographs.
